Poll agency KONDA released the results of the survey conducted on youth between 2008 and 2018. On a TV program Bekir Agirdir, General Manager of KONDA, stated that the results of the Survey showed that Erdogan’s ideal of “raising pious generations’” remained unfulfilled and as a political engineering target. Agirdir claimed that the main reason to explain these somehow surprising results is the intense urbanization trend in Turkey.
Here is a summary of these results:
- Among young people, the percentage of those who define themselves as ‘traditional conservatives’ has decreased from 45 percent to 43 percent
- Among young people, the percentage of those who define themselves as ‘ pious conservatives’ has decreased from 25 percent to 15 percent
- Among young people, the percentage of those who define themselves as ‘modern’ has risen from 29 percent to 42 percent
- Among young people, the percentage of those who define themselves as ‘atheist’ has risen from 1 percent to 4 percent
- Among young people, the fasting rate has decreased from 74 percent to 58 percent
- Among young people, the percentage of those who regularly pray has decreased from 27 percent to 24 percent
- Among young people, the percentage of those who use headscarf has decreased from 58 percent to 50 percent
- The youth are getting married older and the number of those living alone is increasing.
